The Hoards

The Hoards are a large family. My grandfather was the youngest of his sibling group. He was kind and thoughtful to his grandchildren. He was solely responsible for starting me on my nice rock collection. He traveled a lot and everywhere he went he picked up all rocks of interest. Many of the rocks he brought me had been polished. I knew the name of every rock. My collection is still with me after all of these years, though it has dwindled in size due to a lack of storage space. The nicer ones are still in the collection. There were examples of slate, sandstone, marble, crystal, soap stone, granite, volcanic rock, quartz with gold veins in them, and many more than cannot be listed here. Many of them were quite beautiful, and they sat on a shelf in my bedroom for many years while I was growing up. Visitors were amazed by it, for the rocks came in various sizes, some of them quite large. Some rocks he brought were large enough to adorn my mother's garden.

My grandfather, Ernest Edward Oliver Hoard, was a carpenter by trade. He lived in the Lake Tahoe region for many years. We stay at Lake Tahoe every year, and any building that looks like it may have been built in the 50's, could possibly have been worked on by my grandfather. I know he was up there and helped out with building of Heavenly Valley, and the ski lift there. He sent me postcards by the dozens, and told how he helped out with the construction of various buildings. My grandfather eventually ended up in Arkansas, and marrying a nice lady named Marjorie and actually settling down until he passed away.

My grandfather's sisters and brothers were Lily,  Mary Celesta, Oscar, Frank, and Marie. His parents were Ellen McCombs Hoard and Thomas Hoard.
