1961 Zenith Transistor Radio I had one of these when I was in the seventh grade. My father took me for a ride, and we stopped at the local Zenith dealer, and he bought me this for my birthday. I was thrilled. Recently, I found out he had paid $35.00 for it, a lot of money for those days. It was more than a week's worth of groceries! I remember my mother thinking $20.00 was a lot of money to spend on groceries. The only problem was they ate batteries rather quickly. For that reason, my mother threw it in the trash, as she was always a consumate cheapskate (bless her heart). I was heartbroken. My father made good money at that time. We did have lean times during my time in grammar school, so perhaps that was not so easily forgotten for her. I wanted to buy this one on eBay, but lost the auction. Some people are able to bid really high and always win. I no longer buy on eBay for that reason.
