1950s Was a Cool Decade

Few generations had such a care-free life than the children who grew up in the 1950s. There were a lot of things to appreciate, and not that society was perfect, but the social norms of the day were not into hand-wringing, knee-jerk reactions to anything and everything.  Maybe we should have, but our parents had come through a major world war, and were not inclined to be worried so much about the small stuff, and more about living our lives as there were no tomorrow.  We did not worry about lead paint, nor seat belts, nor about jobs.  There were ample jobs available if anyone was inclined to work hard, and not complain. The only things we were taught in school were the 3 R's, Reading, 'Ritin' and 'Rithmatic, and we did well enough.

There was nothing like going to the drive-in movies, and watching our favorite movie stars on the big screen, slurping on toddies, and popcorn.  Convertibles made for great fun on trips, and Barbies were introduced in 1959, at the end of the decade.  Petticoats, bobby socks, and ponytails were the fashion for the young, and fun was going to the fountain at the nearby drug store with friends. 

In 1950 the average income per year was $3,210.00 and by 1959 was $5,010.00. In 1950 a gallon of gas was 18 cents and by 1959 was 25 cents.

A Hula Hoop is the brand name of a plastic toy that has enjoyed popularity since the 1950s. Hula Hoops are currently offered in a variety of colors, and sizes range in diameter from about 20 inches to around 3 feet. Two American toy makers are credited with "inventing" the Hula Hoop.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected as the 34th President of the United States from 1953-1961.
